The Technology

3-Tier Development

Three-tier is a client-server architecture in which the user interface, functional process logic ("business rules"), data storage and data access are developed and maintained as independent modules.

The 3-Tier architecture has the following 3-tiers:

1. Presentation Tier
2. Application Tier/Logic Tier/Business Logic Tier
3. Data Tier

The Process

1. The new system requirements are defined in as much detail as possible. This usually involves interviewing a number of users representing all the external or internal users and other aspects of the existing system.
2. A requirements specification is created for the new system. This will include proof of concept tests to evaluate potentially complex problems. This requirements specification is reviewed and signed off.
3. A design specification is created for the new system. Based on the requirements specification this covers user interface design and process. Depending on the complexity of the system, the requirements and design specification may be combined. This design specification is reviewed and signed off.
4. From the requirements and design specification an accurate timescale and cost is provided. At the customer's option, the entire project can be aborted if the cost, risk etc is deemed too great.
5. The system is build according to the requirements and design specification.
6. The preceding steps are iterated until the customer is satisfied that the refined prototype represents the final product desired.
7. The final system is constructed, based on the refined prototype.
8. The final system is thoroughly evaluated and tested. Routine maintenance is carried out on a continuing basis to prevent large-scale failures and to minimize downtime.
